Please note that the navigation bar at right is for the MOSSO Afghan Hounds.
MOSSO is hosting the pages about the Chambersburg Afghan Hounds
that were seized by the authorities in Franklin County, Pennsylvania in January 2007.
Please note that all the Chambersburg Afghan Hounds have been adopted.

(Also: Please note that a good deal of the so-called "anti-puppy mill legislation" is actually
extremist Animal Rights legislation in disguise, aimed at making it impossible to breed good,
purebred dogs (this means no purebred SAR...Search And Rescue...dogs,  no Bloodhound man-trailers,
forget those cancer-sniffing Golden Retrievers, the quintessential firehouse Dalmatian,
your aunt's favorite Poodle, etc.).
It IS possible to breed purebred dogs, and do a good job.
Don't let the Animal Rights extremists, PETA, and the HSUS tell you
or your law-making politicians otherwise.  Or say goodbye to Fido.   Stir)

Afghan Hound mix from kennel seizure

Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter (Chambersburg, PA) contacted purebred rescue groups in January 2007 to assist them with the dogs from a multi-breed kennel seizure at the home of Cindy & Timothy Keller (Hamilton Township, Franklin County, PA), totaling some 60+ dogs.

The Keller puppy mill consisted of over 13 AKC breeds, with several opposite sex members in each (not including mixes like "labradoodles").  These dogs were housed outdoors, in purpose-built wood-framed pens, with minimal, if any, shelter.  Presumably the puppies were sold via classified ads and local pet stores.  Dogs on site were either intact adults or puppies coming of saleable age.

Both Cindy Keller and Timothy Keller were fined for cruelty in 2002. The Keller's are still in possession of several indoor dogs of several different breeds.

A complaint has been filed with the AKC requesting an investigation and suspension of AKC privileges for Timothy and Cindy Keller.  However, it is fairly common for puppy mills to utilize registries like Continental Kennel Club and American Canine Association when an AKC suspension is incurred, in order to be able to sell puppies "with papers".  The Kellers have not registered a dog with the AKC in several years.

Afghan Hound fanciers, including the national (parent) club and regional clubs are providing for these Afghan Hounds: veterinary care, foster homes, socialization and, ultimately, placement.  Afghan Hound fanciers are not receiving any financial assistance from CVAS or the municipality, which is why any donation you can provide is greatly appreciated.

There are 18 Afghan Hounds from this seizure, suffering from:

intestinal parasites including giardia (hooks/whips/rounds)

various skin conditions including urine scalds and staph infections

fungal and mite infestations of the ears

broken and abscessed teeth; periodontal disease (one hound needed 12 teeth removed)

dehydration

lymph node enlargement

untreated broken bones

severe malnutrition resulting in orthopedic problems, poor post-surgical tissue healing

heart murmurs

poor body condition and feces-encrusted matted coats

a stench that is simply impossible to convey
